What is a Debate Café?
A place where you challenge your intellect, get comfortable speaking in public and sharpen your analytical skills (+get some free coffee and fika)
Each Debate Café has three parts:
1. Mingle, fika and lighthearted games to warm up your public speaking and argumentative skills
2. Debates in a modified British Parliamentary (BP) format with shorter speeches and more interaction
3. Going to a bar/pool place/our office at AF borgen or the AF borgen roooftop for socials!
In BP, the topic (motion) and the side that each person will argue for is assigned. Debates are exclusively judged based on the strength of the arguments and nothing else. Since the topic is assigned, you get the opportunity to come up with crazy arguments that you otherwise don’t get the opportunity to play around with. It also makes debates very interesting and, most importantly, we all stay friends afterward!
No previous experience or membership required!
Visit our Facebook page to see the topic for this evening and attend the event where you can read more about how competitive academic debate works! If there is no event on Facebook, then it means it’s canceled this week. Also, note that the location may change – the Facebook event is where we’ll be for sure.
Debating competitively is not only fun and extremely intellectually challenging, but it is also the most time-efficient way to improve public speaking, knowledge about the world and critical analysis of arguments. It also inevitably stimulates the participants to consider the opponents’ standpoint and allows you to explore ideas that you have never before thought about. Read more about debate here.
