What is a Debate Café?
A place where you challenge your intellect and knowledge, develop your public speaking, analytical and argumentative skills and get free fika!
Each Debate Café has three parts: (1) mingle and fika, followed by (2) debates using the British Parliamentary (BP) format at around 19:00 and then (3) going to a bar/pool place/nation at around 21:00. You can join just parts of the programme as well! In BP, the topic (motion) and the side that each person will argue for is chosen beforehand. Also, debates are exclusively judged based on the strength of the arguments and nothing else. These things makes BP debating intellectually challenging whilst making sure that people can be friends afterward 🙂 No previous experience or membership required!
If you like to discuss things and perhaps “over analyze” stuff (that term doesn’t exist for us though), then do come. Bring paper and pen. We always give a separate introduction for new participants and give them the opportunity to debate in a separate room amongst themselves as debating might be uncomfortable at first for many! 🙂
Visit our Facebook page to see the topic for this evening and attend the event where you can read more about how competitive academic debate works! If there is no event on Facebook, then it means it’s canceled this week. Also, note that the location may change – the Facebook event is where we’ll be for sure.
Debating competitively is not only fun and extremely intellectually challenging, but it is also the most time efficient way to improve public speaking, knowledge about the world and critical analysis of arguments. It also inevitably stimulates the participants to consider the opponents’ standpoint and allows you to explore ideas that you have never before thought about.
