What is a Debate Café?
Our Debate Cafés consist of three parts: (1) mingle and Fika, followed by (2) debates using the British Parliamentary (BP) format and then (3) everyone going to a bar/nation/AF Borgen rooftop.
In British parliament style debate, the topic (called ‘motion’) and the side that each person will argue for is chosen beforehand. This makes it intellectually challenging while also making sure that people can be friends afterward. The motions can be about virtually anything: 100% inheritance tax, autonomous lethal robots or middle-eastern geopolitics to mention just a couple that has come up before.
But our debates are not only fun and extremely challenging intellectually, they are also an opportunity to improve public speaking, argument persuasiveness, and your perspectives of the world.
Visit our Facebook page to see the topic for this evening, attend the event or read more about competitive academic debating. If there is no event on Facebook, then it means it’s canceled this week. Also, note that the location may change – the Facebook event is where we’ll be.
So if you want to become a better public speaker, improve your persuasiveness or just participate in intellectually stimulating debates on contemporary issues – then do come and try British Parliamentary style with us!
