Tarik Saleh and the banned film – Student evening with Tarik Saleh

Feb 17 @ 19:00pm - 21:00
SEK 100 – SEK 200

On Tuesday, February 17, Studentafton will be hosted by Tarik Saleh, the award-winning director behind the Cairo trilogy, which depicts Egyptian society through different perspectives. His latest film “Eagles of the Republic” premiered last fall and won six awards at this year’s Guldbagge Gala, including best film and best screenplay.

With roots in Egypt, it has come at a high price to critically portray society there. Officially, the films are not shown in the country and when filming “The Nile Hilton Incident”, the film crew had to quickly leave the country and at the last minute switch production to Morocco. For his filmmaking, he has been personally banned from returning to his second homeland.

Saleh's cultural work extends far beyond the big screen. Last fall, he was seen competing in På Spåret, and he has previously worked as a program host for SVT, started a magazine, and been a graffiti artist in Stockholm.

How has his life shaped filmmaking? What has it cost him to openly criticize the Egyptian regime? What is it like to work in today's Swedish film industry, which is fraught with political strife and cuts? This is a selection of what will be covered in an evening led by the host of Sveriges Radio's P3 Klubben, Nanna Olasdotter Hallberg.

A conversation about film, freedom of expression and politics. See you there!
