Student evening with Carl Skau, Deputy Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme (WFP)

March 5 @ 19:00 p.m. - 20:30
SEK 120 – SEK 200

Today, around 700 million people, or one in ten people globally, live with hunger. This enormous suffering is often caused and intensified by conflict, natural disasters and economic injustice.

In the midst of this crisis, Carl Skau, Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), works. The organisation operates in 120 countries, 17 of which are classified as emergencies. In 2020, WFP was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its work against hunger and for peacebuilding efforts to combat the exploitation of hunger in conflict.

Famine has been declared in parts of Gaza and Sudan, and Carl Skau brings personal experiences from both places. During the difficult humanitarian situation in Gaza, he worked to bring vital supplies across the border. In Sudan, he has worked with people who have fled the war in cities besieged by the RSF militia, and has worked to increase WFP's support to reach four million people in the country every month. He is now coming to Lund directly from Ukraine to discuss the future of the UN in a new geopolitical reality with his experiences.

With a long background in Swedish diplomacy and international organizations, Skau brings extensive experience of working in complex crisis and conflict environments.

On Thursday, March 5, Studentafton has the great honor of welcoming him to talk about the UN's vital fight against hunger. The evening will be moderated by Sydsvenskan's Heidi Avellan.
